From the Principal - 8 May

International Week is one of my favourite weeks at PLC as we celebrate the diversity and beauty of our own multi-cultural community, with a special focus on the stories of the lives and backgrounds of our students and staff. During this last week, we have celebrated the lives and stories of girls of Greek, African, Swedish, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Bengali and Nepalese backgrounds. Our theme for 2017 is Go Global! Today in the 21st century going global is part of our daily lives. We live and experience life globally, instantly connected with what is happening across the world, politically, economically, physically, socially, environmentally, and also in the worlds of education and work. The impacts of globalisation are everywhere and along with the exciting opportunities it opens up for us, globalisation also informs us of the many inequalities and injustices in our world. Go Global celebrates the diversity, vitality and strength of our global community at PLC, and it also encourages us to celebrate diversity and to recognise how much we can learn from others, challenging us to embrace a global perspective and to respond compassionately, generously and proactively to the many needs and issues facing people and nations around the world.

We have enjoyed a very colourful and action packed week of celebrations including wonderful displays, delicious food, cultural dancing and the ‘amazing race’. One particular highlight was Wednesday’s Harmony Day, which was an exciting quad day with entertaining activities, international food and festivities. I would really like to thank Anne Green and her amazing I-Week committee of senior girls who have enthusiastically and capably planned, coordinated and led an action packed week of celebrations and activities for all.

This term we are also enjoying and celebrating our magnificent new Performing Arts Centre which opened its doors on the first day of term. The music and drama departments have now moved into their new home and Senior School music, drama and theatre studies classes, ensemble rehearsals and individual music lessons are all taking place in this stunning new facility. Our new Performing Arts Centre will be officially opened on Tuesday 16 May by PLC Old Collegian and world-renowned composer Professor Liza Lim. Official celebrations will continue over the two days, 16 and 17 May, when every girl and staff member in the school will have the opportunity to join in the festivities and attend a concert in the auditorium.

The Performing Arts Centre will be open on both these afternoons from 3.00pm to 4.30pm for any parents or members of the PLC community who would like to visit and have a tour of this magnificent facility. We look forward to welcoming you to view and tour our new Performing Arts Centre and be part of our special celebrations.
